Indian Sculpture

The Vedika pillar with Yakshini ”Chandra,” originally from Bharhut, is currently housed in the Indian Museum, Kolkata. This pillar is a fine example of early Buddhist art.

The ”Chauri Bearer” Yakshi, also known as the Didarganj Yakshi, is one of the finest examples of Mauryan art. It reflects the highly polished stone sculpture technique typical of the Mauryan period.

The Bagh Caves are a group of rock-cut monuments in Madhya Pradesh, India, known for their exquisite mural paintings. The cave named Rangmahal features vibrant frescoes and is a prominent part of the site.

The sculpture of the ’bearded man,’ found at Mohenjo-Daro, shows stylistic similarities with Mesopotamian art, particularly in the depiction of facial features and beard, suggesting cultural interactions.

The Mathura period is renowned for its realistic portrait statues, which showcased individualized features and expressions. These statues were significant in both Buddhist and Jain art traditions.

The Sultanganj Buddha, a large bronze statue from the Gupta period, is made of copper. It is one of the finest examples of early Buddhist art and is currently housed in the Birmingham Museum.
