In the extrinsic pathway of blood coagulation, thromboplastin (tissue factor) is released by damaged tissues and combines with factor VII (proconvertin) to form a complex. This complex then activates factor X leading into the common pathway of coagulation. This step is crucial for the rapid response to vascular injury, initiating clot formation.
