Percussion Instruments

The Kanjeera is a traditional South Indian frame drum used in Carnatic music concerts as a secondary percussion instrument, often accompanying the mridangam. Structure:

Small circular wooden frame (7–9 inches in diameter).
A single membrane, traditionally made from monitor lizard skin, now often replaced with synthetic alternatives.
Contains one or more small metal jingles inserted into the frame to produce a shimmering sound.
Technique and Playing:

Played using the right hand (for right-handed players), with the left hand holding the frame.
Fingers and palm produce different strokes like tha, dhi, nam.
Capable of subtle modulation by adjusting hand tension or moisture on the skin.
Commonly used in Tani Avartanam (percussion solos) and rhythmic dialogues.
Unique Features:

Combines rhythmic sharpness with tonal variation.
Requires high precision and control due to its small size.

In the context of Mridangam, the term Vaaru refers to the black circular patch at the center of the right-hand membrane (valanthalai). Use and Importance of Vaaru:

Made from a mixture of rice paste, iron filings, and other materials.
Helps produce a wide range of tonal modulations and harmonics.
Gives clarity and pitch to strokes such as tha, nam, and dhin.
Increases the resonance and depth of sound.
Vital for tuning the mridangam accurately to a specific pitch.
Without Vaaru:

The tonal clarity would diminish.
The mridangam would not sustain the required pitch.
