The Enemy Pearl

Dr. Sadao, the protagonist of "The Enemy," is portrayed as both a patriot and a compassionate human being. As a doctor, he embodies the qualities of a true patriot, serving his country by performing his duty during wartime. However, when a wounded American soldier is brought to him, Dr. Sadao’s compassion overrides his sense of duty. He chooses to save the enemy soldier, despite the risk to his own life and honor, revealing his deep humanity. His actions highlight the conflict between his national loyalty and his innate sense of compassion for all human beings, regardless of their nationality. Dr. Sadao is not blind to the patriotism of his country, but he also values the sanctity of life, demonstrating that true patriotism does not exclude empathy or compassion for others.

Dr. Sadao, though a loyal Japanese citizen and an acclaimed surgeon, was torn between his duty to his nation and his humanitarian values. After saving the life of an injured American prisoner of war, he faces immense pressure from society and personal risk. However, his ethical beliefs prevent him from surrendering the wounded man to the authorities who would surely execute him. Realising that sheltering the enemy was dangerous for his family and career, Dr. Sadao discreetly arranges for the prisoner’s escape. He waits until the man is physically well enough, then provides him with a boat, food, bottled water, extra clothing, and instructions on how to row to a nearby island. From there, the prisoner is to be rescued by a Korean fishing boat. Dr. Sadao even instructs the man to light a signal at night so he would know he was safe. This carefully thought-out plan shows Sadao’s intelligence, compassion, and moral courage. He balances the need for secrecy with the urgency of saving a life. His decision to not betray the prisoner despite being a war enemy reflects the story’s larger theme—that humanity transcends national boundaries and wartime hatred.

The General did not send Sadao to the front because he trusted only Sadao's medical skills and feared that no other doctor could save his life if needed.

Dr. Sadao’s success was shaped significantly by his father’s values and vision. His father was a strict disciplinarian who prioritized education and instilled in Sadao a deep sense of duty. He sent Sadao to study medicine in America, ensuring he received the best training. At the same time, he ensured Sadao remained loyal to his heritage by approving only a Japanese wife. Sadao’s skill as a surgeon and his moral courage during the war are rooted in the strong foundation his father laid. Thus, his father’s guidance was instrumental in shaping Sadao’s success both as a doctor and as a principled human being.
