Microwave Remote Sensing is a technique that uses microwave wavelengths (approximately 1 mm to 1 meter) to observe and analyze the Earth’s surface and atmosphere.

Microwave remote sensing can be passive (radiometers) or active (radars like Synthetic Aperture Radar).

The interaction between microwaves and the Earth’s surface is influenced by several factors:

By understanding these factors, analysts can interpret radar images to extract valuable information about terrain, vegetation, and surface conditions.

Several factors influence the overall quality and clarity of aerial photographs.

In remote sensing, pattern refers to the spatial arrangement of objects and their repetitive characteristics visible in an image.
Pattern is a key visual element that helps interpreters recognize features such as urban layouts, road networks, field boundaries, or forest structures.
For example, regular, grid-like patterns often indicate planned settlements, while irregular patterns suggest natural vegetation or terrain.
Patterns provide context clues that support other interpretation elements like tone, texture, and shape.

Digital Image Processing (DIP) involves a sequence of steps used to improve the quality and interpretability of digital images.
The first step is image acquisition, which means capturing images using sensors or scanners and converting them into digital form.
Next is pre-processing, which includes correction of distortions, noise removal, and image enhancement to improve visual quality.
Image segmentation follows, dividing the image into meaningful regions or objects for easier analysis.
Then comes image classification, where pixels are categorized into classes or themes based on spectral signatures.
Post-processing may involve filtering, smoothing, or combining results for better accuracy.
Finally, information extraction and interpretation convert processed data into usable information for decision-making.

Hyperspectral Imagery collects data in a large number of narrow, contiguous spectral bands.
Unlike multispectral sensors which may capture 4–10 bands, hyperspectral sensors can record information in 200 to 300 or more bands across the visible, near-infrared, and shortwave infrared regions.
This high spectral resolution allows detailed analysis of material properties, chemical composition, and subtle variations in surface features.
Hyperspectral imagery is widely used in agriculture, mineral exploration, and environmental monitoring because it can detect features that are invisible in broad-band multispectral images.
Therefore, the average number of bands in hyperspectral sensors typically ranges from 200 to 300.

In remote sensing and digital image classification, the ParallelPipe or Parallelepiped classifier is a simple decision rule used to categorize pixels into classes.
This method defines decision boundaries in the form of multi-dimensional rectangles (parallelepipeds) in feature space.
Each class is represented by a range of values for each spectral band — the classifier checks whether a pixel’s spectral values fall within these ranges.
If they do, the pixel is assigned to that class.
Though easy to implement, the method can lead to unclassified or ambiguously classified pixels if spectral ranges overlap.
Thus, ParallelPipe is a fundamental but basic image classification approach.
