The transition element with varying oxidation states may form intermediate compounds with one of the reactants. These intermediates provide a new path with lower activation energy and get decomposed on reaction with the other reactant regenerating the catalyst.

Transition elements form a large number of complex compounds due to the comparatively smaller sizes of the metal ions; their high ionic charges and the availability of d-orbitals for bond formation.
