In MARC-II (Machine-Readable Cataloging) the Variable Field stores bibliographic data such as titles authors and subjects. This field complements the Leader and Record Directory allowing libraries to encode and share detailed metadata for cataloging.

PRECIS (Preserved Context Indexing System) was developed by Derik Austin to create subject indexes. This method emphasizes retaining the context and relationships of terms in an index ensuring efficient and meaningful document retrieval.

Mnemonics are memory aids that simplify the recall of complex information by organizing it into patterns or associations. For example in classification systems a mnemonic might be used to remember the code for a particular subject or topic.
