CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It is a life-saving emergency procedure that combines chest compressions and artificial ventilation. It is performed when the heart stops beating (cardiac arrest) or breathing has ceased. The goal of CPR is to restore partial flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart, delaying tissue death and extending the window of opportunity for a successful resuscitation without permanent brain damage.
Cardio refers to the heart.
Pulmonary refers to the lungs.
Resuscitation means revival or restoration. CPR is commonly used in cases of drowning, heart attack, or sudden collapse.
