Cholera is an acute infectious disease caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It primarily affects the small intestine and is characterized by sudden onset of profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting, and severe dehydration. If not promptly treated, cholera can lead to rapid fluid loss, electrolyte imbalance, shock, and death. It is a major public health problem in areas with poor sanitation and inadequate clean water supply.
