One artist who inspires me deeply on the sitar is Ustad Vilayat Khan.
He was known for his unique Gayaki Ang (vocal style) of sitar playing.
Vilayat Khan brought the smoothness and subtlety of Khayal singing into instrumental music.
His Meend (glides) were so fine that each note blended perfectly into the next.
He used intricate Kan swaras and microtones to add life to his phrases.
His renditions of ragas like Yaman and Bageshri are benchmarks for melodic beauty.
He avoided excessive speed, focusing instead on tone purity and lyrical flow.
His right-hand technique balanced strong Da-Ra strokes with soft plucking, producing clear, sweet sound.
Vilayat Khan’s taans and gamaks were never mechanical — they felt like singing phrases.
This Gayaki Ang has inspired countless modern sitarists to play with a singer’s sensitivity, not just speed.
For me, his approach teaches the value of patience, clarity, and emotional depth in instrumental music.

Roopak tala is a 7-beat tala used in Hindustani classical music.
It has a unique structure with the theka: Tin Tin Na | Dhin Na | Dhin Na.
Its division is 3 + 2 + 2 beats.
Roopak is distinctive because it begins with a khali (wave) instead of a clap.
It is popular in Khayal and light classical compositions.
Tigun notation: Tigun means triple speed. So, for Roopak: each beat is divided into 3 parts.
Example: Dha Dhin Dhin | Dha Tin Tin | Ta Dhin Dhin
This notation shows how the theka is expanded in triple speed.

Pandit Mushtaq Ali Khan (1911–1989) was a renowned sitar and surbahar player.
He belonged to the Senia Gharana, which traces back to Mian Tansen.
He was known for his pure, traditional style, avoiding excessive modern improvisations.
His playing reflected deep knowledge of dhrupad-ang, Alap, and Meend-heavy movements.
He preserved old compositions, taught many students, and inspired generations to value authenticity.
His awards include Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
Mushtaq Ali Khan’s recordings are still studied by students who want to learn pure Senia style.

Tuning technique varies for different Indian classical instruments.
For example, for the sitar: first, the main playing strings are tuned to Sa, Pa, Sa of two octaves.
Chikari strings are tuned to high Sa and Pa for resonance.
Tarabs (sympathetic strings) are tuned to the notes of the raga in sequence.
A tanpura is used as reference for accurate Sa.
For the Sarod: main strings are tuned to Sa, Pa, Sa with drone and rhythm strings adjusted accordingly.
Proper tuning ensures correct intonation, clear tone, and rich resonance.
Artists fine-tune with pegs and micro-adjusters for perfect pitch before every performance.

Ustad Allauddin Khan (1862–1972) was one of India’s greatest multi-instrumentalists and music teachers.
He was born in East Bengal (now Bangladesh) and trained rigorously under various gurus.
Allauddin Khan became an expert in Sarod and other instruments like Sitar, Violin, and Pakhawaj.
He founded the Maihar Gharana, known for its systematic training and emphasis on both melody and rhythm.
His legendary disciples include Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Annapurna Devi, and Pannalal Ghosh.
Allauddin Khan introduced orchestration into Indian classical music, forming the Maihar Band for training students in group playing.
He was awarded Padma Vibhushan for his contributions.
His life and work strengthened the foundation of Hindustani music education and global outreach.

Gamak:
A Gamak is a musical ornamentation used to embellish a swara (note) by oscillating, shaking, or forcefully repeating it.
It gives depth, force, and mood to a raga. There are various types of Gamaks like Kampita (vibration), Andolita (swinging), Tiripa (triple repetition).
Example: In Raga Darbari Kanada, Gamak is heavily used on Komal Ga and Dha to create a majestic, grave mood.
Meend:
A Meend is a glide or smooth slide from one swara to another without interruption.
It connects two notes with a continuous flow, showing mastery of pitch control.
Meend is an essential feature in instruments like Sitar, Sarangi, and in vocal music.
Example: In Raga Yaman, a Meend from Ni to Ga gives it its graceful flow.
Kan:
Kan is a grace note or a touch note used just before or after the main swara.
It adds delicacy and microtonal nuance to the swara, enhancing expression.
Kan is often very short and subtle but makes the phrase sound alive.
Example: In Raga Kafi, a Kan of Komal Ni can be added to Dha for subtle beauty.
