Raga

Alap is the unmetered exploration that introduces the soul of a raga.
It develops slowly, without rhythm, revealing key swaras, phrases, and emotional colour.
Example: Raga Yaman Alap (with 60 swaras)
1–5: Ni~ Sa Re Ga Ma | Meend from Ni to Sa
6–10: Ga(kan) Ma Pa Dha | Krintan on Ga
11–20: Ma~ Dha Ni Sa | Meend + Gamak on Ma
21–30: Re Ga Ma Dha Pa Ma Ga | Smooth glide between Ma-Dha
31–40: Ni Sa Re Ga Ma Ga Re Sa | Kan note on Re
41–50: Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa | Krintan on Pa, Gamak on Dha
51–60: Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Re Sa | Ending phrase with Meend from Dha to Sa
Use the same method to create Alap for Bhairav and Bageshri.
In Bhairav, stress Andolan on komal Re and Dha.
In Bageshri, use slow Meend from Ga to Ma, with soft Kan on Ni.
These phrases combine pure notes with ornamentations to show the full mood of each raga.

Razakhani Gat is a medium tempo (Madhya Laya) composition in sitar playing.
It is generally set in Teentaal (16 beats) and focuses on clarity of bols and rhythmic variety.
Below is an example of a Razakhani Gat in Raga Bageshri:
Gat: Dha Ra Dha Ra Re Sa, Sa Re Ga Ma, Ga Ma Dha Ni, Dha Ni Sa Ga.
The Bols used are: Da Ra Da Ra Re Sa (plucking pattern for right hand).

Tana 2 (32 beats):

Each Tana is a fast melodic run that fits perfectly into the tala cycle and resolves on Sam with a Tihai.
Students must maintain Raga Bhairav or Bageshri’s note structure while improvising.

A Maseetkhani Gat is a slow, vilambit composition used in sitar playing.
It is played in Teentaal (16 beats) and known for its graceful, dignified style.
The main Gat includes melodic phrases (Bol) with intricate rhythmic patterns.
Each Toda is a short rhythmic piece that elaborates the Gat, often ending in a Tihai.
Below is an example structure for a Maseetkhani Gat in Raga Yaman:
Gat (Main): Dha Ra Dha Ra Re Sa, Sa Re Ga Ma, Pa Ma Ga Re, Sa Ni Dha Pa.
Toda 1: Ga Ma Dha, Ni Dha Pa Ma, Ga Re Sa Dha | Ti Ti Ti (Tihai).
Toda 2: Re Ga Ma Ga, Re Sa Dha Pa, Dha Ni Sa Re | Ti Ti Ti (Tihai).
Toda 3: Ma Ga Re Sa, Ni Dha Pa Ma, Re Ga Ma Pa | Ti Ti Ti (Tihai).
Toda 4: Ga Ma Pa Dha, Ni Sa Re Ga, Ma Pa Dha Ni | Ti Ti Ti (Tihai).
Each Toda should fit into the Teentaal cycle and resolve on Sam.
Students may improvise with variations but must maintain the raga’s mood.

Raga Bageshri is a popular Hindustani raga sung in late night (2nd Prahar).
Its mood is romantic, soft, and slightly melancholic.
Its arohana (ascent) is: Ni Sa Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa, and avarohana (descent): Sa Ni Dha Ma Ga Re Sa.
It uses Komal Ni and Komal Ga, with other swaras shuddha.
Its vadi swara is Ma, and samvadi is Sa.
Bageshri’s pakad (signature phrase) is Ga Ma Dha Ni Dha Ma Ga.
It is usually performed in vilambit (slow tempo) and madhya laya compositions.
Instrumentalists and vocalists use Meend and Kan extensively to bring out its softness.

The time–theory of ragas is an important principle in Indian classical music.
It states that each raga should ideally be performed at a specific time of day or night to enhance its emotional effect.
This is based on ancient observations that certain swaras evoke particular moods better during certain hours.
For example, ragas using Komal (flat) notes are often sung in the early morning or late night.
Ragas with shuddha or tivra swaras are linked with daylight or bright parts of the day.
The entire day is divided into 8 time zones called Prahars.
Each Prahar has a set of ragas assigned to it.
Example: Raga Bhairav is performed in the early morning; Raga Yaman is performed in the evening.
This time-link enhances the spiritual and psychological connection between artist, listener, and nature.

Alap:
Alap is the unmetered, slow introduction of a raga in Indian classical music.
It develops the mood, structure, and key notes of the raga without rhythm or percussion.
It starts from slow phrases, gradually expanding into higher notes.
Vocalists and instrumentalists both use Alap to unfold the raga’s identity.
Example: In Raga Yaman, an artist may start with Sa-Re-Ga combinations in the lower octave, slowly rising to upper Ni-Sa.
Taan:
Taan is a fast, intricate melodic pattern sung or played in rhythmic cycles during the middle or end of a performance.
It shows the artist’s virtuosity, breath control, and creative improvisation.
Taan patterns can be straight, zig-zag, or complex.
Example: In Khayal singing, Taan is used to create excitement near the climax of the composition.
Sut:
Sut means thread — it refers to musical phrases that connect different swaras smoothly, creating continuity in improvisation.
It helps transition between various musical ideas, giving the performance a woven feel.
Example: A singer may use a Sut to link an Alap phrase with a fast Taan, maintaining melodic flow.

Statement I: Correct. Raga Bhairav is traditionally sung in the early morning hours, specifically during sandhiprakash kaal — the transitional twilight period at sunrise. Its mood and structure suit the peaceful, calm morning atmosphere.
Statement II: Incorrect. Raga Malkauns is a late night raga, usually performed between midnight and 3 AM. It is known for its serious, deep, meditative feel, which does not align with morning time.
So, only Statement I is true.

1. G M D D P → Bageshri: The phrase G M D D P is a signature pakad (catchphrase) of Raga Bageshri. It reflects its characteristic melodic movement, descending from Dha to Pa smoothly with emphasis on Ma and Ga.
2. DMPDG, MGRS → Madhyam Gram: This phrase shows a typical Madhyam Gram scale treatment, which is an ancient pitch system where the Pancham is tuned differently. The phrase uses Madhyam prominently.
3. Three shruti pancham → Bhairav: In the old shruti (microtone) system, Bhairav raga’s Pancham is said to be three shrutis above its base — a technical reference in ancient texts for tuning.
4. Ragvivekadhyaya → Sangeet Ratnakar: Ragvivekadhyaya is one of the chapters in Sharngadeva’s famous music treatise, Sangeet Ratnakar. This text discusses raga classification, grammar, and shruti theory.
