Clay

Woodware is made of wood and not clay. In contrast, Earthenware, Stoneware, and Porcelain are made from clay, fired at varying temperatures, and are true clay wares.

Pinching is an ancient ceramic technique. It involves using fingers to shape clay without tools. Due to its simplicity, it is universal and requires no advanced equipment. Methods like Coiling, Jiggering, and Slab require tools and are more recent.

Grog is a valuable additive in clay bodies due to its unique properties: Grog is made up of crushed, previously fired clay. Adding grog to clay bodies helps to reduce the amount of shrinkage during drying and firing by reducing the amount of water in the clay. By minimizing shrinkage, grog can prevent the clay from warping or cracking during drying and firing. Grog does not increase plasticity, add color, or affect texture significantly.

Pinching uses hands, slip casting uses molds, and throwing uses a wheel to shape clay.
Drawing and breaking methods are unrelated to pottery.

Preparing clay involves:

• Soaking the clay.
• Mixing it into a slurry.
• Letting it stand to remove water.
• Pouring liquid clay on a plaster slab.
• Kneading with sand to achieve the right consistency.

Pottery involves:

• Designing and making.
• Drying to remove moisture.
• Trimming and cleaning up.
• Bisque firing.
• Finally, glazing and firing the pottery.

Making a square plate using clay slabs involves: Placing the mold, flattening the slab using a foam roller, sanding the edges to smoothen them, trimming excess clay, and redefining the edges for a clean look.

• Preparing the mold and slip is the first step.
• The slip is poured into the mold.
• Excess slip is removed.
• Once set, the piece is released from the mold.
• Finally, the piece is finished.

The correct sequence is: Prepare Mold and Slip > Fill with Slip > Remove Excess Slip > Release from Mold > Finishing.

• Wedging removes air bubbles from the clay.
• Throwing shapes the clay on the wheel.
• Centering aligns the clay.
• Turning trims and refines the shape.
• Firing hardens the pot.

The correct sequence is: Wedging > Throwing > Centering > Turning > Firing.

Slip is a liquid clay mixture used for joining clay parts. It ensures a seamless bond in the pinching method. Other options are unsuitable for this process.

Clay is opaque, not transparent. It has a natural ivory color, is easily scratched when unfired, and can take decorations. Transparency is the opposite of its natural properties.

When clay dries, it loses its water content, which is essential for maintaining its plasticity and moldability. Without sufficient water, clay becomes brittle and cannot be reshaped or reworked effectively.
