Introduction To High Temperature Kiln

Temperature is the most critical factor in a kiln environment, influencing clay vitrification and glaze maturity. Other elements like atmosphere, shape, or fuel play supportive but secondary roles.

Pyrometric cones are designed as slender triangular pyramids to bend under specific temperatures, helping measure kiln heat. Shapes like squares or circles wouldn’t serve the same purpose.

Kilns can be classified as either intermittent or continuous, here's the difference: Intermittent kilns are loaded, fired, cooled, and unloaded in batches, such as clamp kilns, scotch kilns, and shuttle kilns. Tunnel kilns are continuous kilns. The pottery is moved through a tunnel, from preheating to cooling zones. The main difference is tunnel kilns are continuous, and other listed kilns are intermittent.

In a downdraft kiln, combustion gases flow from the bottom of the chamber to the top and are then directed downward before exiting. This design ensures even heat distribution.

Fiberglass is widely used as kiln insulation due to its low thermal conductivity and excellent heat retention. Materials like aluminum, concrete, and copper lack the necessary insulation properties.

cobalt oxide gives a blue hue, and porcelain is usually white.

Bisque is the first firing,
glaze is the second,
pyrometric cones measure temperatures visually,

Thermometers, barometers, and ammeters are unsuitable for high-temperature measurement in kilns.

• Bone china is fired at a temperature lower than porcelain but higher than stoneware.
• Stoneware is fired at mid-range temperatures.
• Terracotta is a low-fired ceramic that requires the lowest temperature.

The correct order is: Porcelain > Bone China > Stoneware > Terracotta.

Kilns are primarily classified into updraft and downdraft types based on airflow. Updraft kilns draw air upward, while downdraft kilns direct air downward. Side draft kilns are less common and not a primary classification.

Cone 4 is the standard heat level for bisque firing porcelain. It ensures uniform firing and prepares clay for glazing. Other cones are for different firing stages.

A pyrometer is specifically designed for measuring high kiln temperatures. It uses non-contact measurement, making it ideal for firing pottery. Thermometers and other tools are unsuitable for such high heat.
