Genetic engineered male sterile crop plants are obtained by inserting barnase gene in front of promoter of plant gene that has tapetum specific expression. Barnase protein expressed is a extracellular RNase that degenerates tapetum in Pollen Mother Cells (PMCs) making them sterile.
