Organisms found in fresh water have a problem of excess internal water because of endosmosis. Organisms found in ocean or saltish water have a problem of low internal water content due to exomosis. For aquatic organisms the quality (chemical composition, pH) of water becomes important. Many freshwater animals cannot live for long in sea water and vice versa because of the osmotic problems they would face.
