Deforestation:
Deforestation refers to the process of clearing or removing forests or trees to make space for agricultural activities, urbanization, or industrial development. This removal of forests leads to a decrease in the forested area and the loss of biodiversity that depends on forests.
Step 1: Causes of Deforestation
There are multiple causes of deforestation, which can be broadly categorized as:
1. Agricultural Expansion:
One of the primary drivers of deforestation is the expansion of agricultural land. Forests are cleared to make room for crops, livestock grazing, and commercial plantations (e.g., palm oil, coffee, and rubber).
2. Logging and Timber Extraction:
The demand for timber, paper, and other wood products contributes to deforestation. Illegal logging, as well as commercial logging for timber, has significantly reduced forest cover in many parts of the world.
3. Urbanization and Infrastructure Development:
Urbanization and infrastructure projects, such as the construction of roads, dams, and buildings, require large tracts of forested land. As cities and towns expand, forests are cleared to accommodate growing populations and industries.
4. Mining Activities:
Mining for resources such as coal, minerals, and oil often involves clearing large forested areas. This process not only removes the trees but also leads to soil erosion and pollution.
5. Climate Change and Forest Fires:
Climate change has led to increased temperatures and droughts, which in turn increase the occurrence of forest fires. Both natural and man-made fires contribute to the destruction of forests.
