Sanskritisation:
Sanskritisation is a term coined by the sociologist M.N. Srinivas to describe the process by which lower caste communities in India try to emulate the customs, rituals, and practices of higher caste communities, particularly the Brahmins, in order to raise their social status. This process involves adopting the cultural traits of the higher castes, such as rituals, lifestyle, dress, food habits, and social behavior, in hopes of improving one’s position within the social hierarchy.
Step 1: The Process of Sanskritisation
The process of Sanskritisation can be understood in terms of both social and cultural changes that lower caste groups undertake. The following are some common features of Sanskritisation:
1. Adopting Brahminical Rituals: Lower castes often start adopting Brahminical religious rituals, such as performing rituals and prayers that are traditionally associated with the higher castes.
2. Dress and Food Habits: These communities may begin to follow the dietary restrictions of higher castes, avoid eating foods considered impure, and adopt the clothing style of upper castes.
3. Religious and Cultural Practices: The practice of reading Hindu religious texts, such as the Vedas or Upanishads, or the worship of deities specific to upper castes, is another feature of Sanskritisation.
Step 2: Impact of Sanskritisation
The impact of Sanskritisation is multi-faceted:
1. Social Mobility: Sanskritisation offers lower castes a potential route for upward social mobility. By emulating the rituals and customs of the higher castes, they are attempting to change their social position within the caste hierarchy.
2. Cultural Assimilation: It has led to cultural assimilation, where the practices and lifestyles of higher castes are valorized and adopted by lower caste groups. However, this does not always result in full acceptance or equality within the higher caste groups.
3. Disruption of Traditional Hierarchies: In some cases, the process of Sanskritisation has led to the breakdown of rigid caste distinctions, though this has often been partial and temporary.
4. Reinforcement of Social Hierarchy: While Sanskritisation offers a chance for mobility, it can also reinforce the existing social hierarchies, as the lower castes still remain subordinate to the higher castes despite adopting their customs.

Female foeticide leads to a distorted sex ratio in a country, where the number of females is significantly lower than the number of males. This imbalance can result in a "surplus" of men, with a shortage of women in the population. Such an imbalance disrupts family structures and can have long-term negative effects on social and cultural development.
Step 1: The demographic effect of female foeticide.
In regions where female foeticide is prevalent, the natural sex ratio (which is typically around 1:1) becomes skewed. This results in fewer females being born, and over time, the gap between the male and female population widens, leading to a severe gender imbalance.
Step 2: Social consequences of a distorted sex ratio.
A skewed sex ratio can have a range of social consequences. It can lead to challenges in finding marriage partners, which may result in increased societal tension, human trafficking, and a rise in violence against women. Additionally, this imbalance can affect economic and social stability, with fewer women contributing to the workforce and family life.

In India, the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994 was enacted to prevent female foeticide. This law bans the use of sex-selective diagnostic tests and ensures that sex determination before birth is prohibited. The aim of the law is to prevent the abortion of female fetuses based on their gender.

The PCPNDT Act regulates the use of pre-natal diagnostic techniques and ensures that sex determination tests are not performed. The law also regulates the sale of diagnostic equipment to prevent misuse. It mandates that clinics providing such services must register with the government and keep detailed records.

The law provides for strict punishment for those involved in conducting illegal sex-determination tests or performing sex-selective abortions. It also includes provisions for the prosecution of medical professionals and clinics that violate the law.

4. Decreased Immune Function: The immune system weakens with age, making older adults more susceptible to infections and illnesses.
5. Changes in Sleep Patterns: Older adults may experience changes in sleep cycles, including difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, and often wake up earlier.

Disability refers to a condition that impairs an individual's ability to perform certain physical, mental, or social tasks. There are various types of disability, which can be categorized as follows:

1. Physical Disability: This includes impairments in physical functioning such as mobility or dexterity issues. Examples include paralysis, amputations, or chronic conditions like arthritis.

3. Intellectual Disability: This refers to limitations in intellectual functioning, affecting reasoning, learning, and problem-solving. It is often associated with developmental delays.
4. Psychiatric Disability: Mental health conditions like depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder that affect a person's ability to engage in daily activities.
5. Learning Disabilities: These impairments affect the ability to learn specific skills, such as reading (dyslexia) or math (dyscalculia), despite having average or above-average intelligence.
