Pattern Marking

The slash and spread method is used to transfer darts from one position to another on a pattern, in this case from the waist dart to the side seam. This method allows for altering the shape and fit of the garment. Steps:

Draw the basic bodice block including the waist dart on paper.
Draw a line from the apex (point of dart) to the waistline (waist dart legs).
Cut along one dart leg from waistline up to the apex but do not cut through apex; leave a small hinge.
Cut along the other dart leg similarly.
Now, cut a line from the apex towards the side seam where the new dart will be placed.
Spread the pattern by opening the original waist dart legs apart so that the dart closes.
At the same time, close the slash cut towards the side seam; this creates a new dart at the side seam.
Trace the new pattern outline and mark the new side seam dart.

Marking on fabric is essential for guiding cutting and sewing. The three common methods of marking on fabrics are:

Tailor’s Chalk or Pencil: Used to make temporary marks on fabric surfaces; easy to brush off or wash away. Suitable for marking darts, pleats, or seam lines.
Tracing Wheel and Carbon Paper: A tracing wheel is rolled over carbon paper placed between the pattern and fabric to transfer marks. It provides accurate and clear markings on the wrong side of fabric.
Thread Tracing: Involves loosely basting or stitching along the pattern lines with contrasting thread to guide cutting or sewing. It is useful for delicate or thick fabrics where chalk marks may not be visible.

The blanks are filled as: one inch and armhole level. For a sleeveless garment, the armhole is finished by going one inch up on the armhole level to shape the armhole properly. This adjustment ensures a neat, comfortable fit around the shoulder and arm area without the sleeve. This technique helps prevent gaping or tightness and gives a clean finished look to sleeveless designs.

Ease refers to the amount of extra space or allowance added to the body measurements in a garment to provide comfort, mobility, and design style. It is the difference between the garment’s actual measurements and the wearer’s body measurements. There are two types of ease:

Wearing ease: Necessary for comfortable movement, such as breathing and sitting.
Design ease: Added for style and appearance, like loose or flowing garments.
Without appropriate ease, a garment would be too tight and restrict movement.

The Slash and Spread method is a pattern making technique used to add fullness or flare to a garment. It involves cutting (slashing) the pattern vertically or horizontally and then spreading the pieces apart to create additional width or flare in specific areas, such as skirts or sleeves. This method allows designers to modify an existing pattern without redrafting completely and is especially useful to introduce gathers, pleats, or added ease. For example, slashing and spreading at the hemline of a skirt pattern will add flare, while doing so at the bust area will add fullness for comfort or style.
