The Montague-Chelmsford proposals led to the Government of India Act 1919,
which introduced constitutional reforms in British India.
These reforms laid the foundation for a responsible government system
and introduced the concept of diarchy in provinces.

The administrators of Union Territories in India are designated differently based on the nature of administration. Some UTs have a Lieutenant Governor (e.g., Delhi, Puducherry), some have a Chief Commissioner, and others have an Administrator. Thus, all three designations are used in different UTs.

The Shah Commission, headed by Justice J. C. Shah, was appointed in 1966 to look into the reorganization of Punjab. Based on its recommendations, Haryana was carved out from Punjab as a separate state, and Chandigarh was made a Union Territory.
