Poshan Abhiyaan is a flagship nutrition mission of the Government of India that aims to improve nutritional outcomes for children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers by monitoring and reviewing various nutrition-related interventions. Two important short-term interventions under Poshan Abhiyaan are:
Treatment of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM): Identifying and treating children suffering from SAM through supplementary feeding and medical care.
Promotion of Anaemia Control Programmes: Providing iron and folic acid supplementation to children and pregnant women to combat anaemia. These interventions help in immediate improvement of nutritional status and prevent long-term health problems.

Two common methods of feeding a patient are:
Oral Feeding: This is the most natural method where food is given through the mouth. It may involve assistance in feeding if the patient is weak.
Tube Feeding (Enteral Feeding): In cases where a patient cannot eat by mouth, a feeding tube (like nasogastric or gastrostomy tube) is used to deliver nutrients directly into the stomach or intestine.

A person with dentures should be given a soft or easy-to-chew diet to avoid discomfort and ensure proper nutrition.
The food should be soft, moist, and easy to chew and swallow.
Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy food items. Examples of this diet:
Mashed potatoes
Soft-cooked rice or porridge

PEM stands for Protein-Energy Malnutrition. It is a nutritional disorder caused by inadequate intake of protein and calories. PEM is common in children and can lead to stunted growth, weakened immunity, and increased susceptibility to infections. It includes conditions like marasmus and kwashiorkor.

Refers to a condition where a child’s weight is low for their age. It indicates chronic malnutrition.	Refers to a condition where a child’s weight is too low for their height or body size. It indicates acute malnutrition.
It reflects both past and present nutritional status.	It reflects recent and severe weight loss or failure to gain weight.
It is measured by comparing weight-for-age using growth charts.	It is measured by comparing weight-for-height using growth charts.

Food fortification is the process of adding essential vitamins and minerals to food items to improve their nutritional value and prevent nutrient deficiencies in the population. Examples of food fortification:
Iodisation of salt: Adding iodine to common salt to prevent iodine deficiency disorders like goitre.
Fortification of wheat flour with iron and folic acid: To reduce anaemia and other nutrient deficiencies. Fortified foods help in addressing micronutrient deficiencies on a large scale, especially in vulnerable groups.

A fall in haemoglobin levels indicates Iron Deficiency Anaemia, a common nutritional deficiency disorder especially among adolescent girls due to increased iron requirements during growth and menstruation. Two other symptoms of Iron Deficiency Anaemia are:
Fatigue and weakness due to insufficient oxygen transport in the body.
Pale skin and mucous membranes caused by low red blood cell count.

The National Prophylaxis Programme for Prevention of Blindness was launched in India in 1970 to address widespread cases of nutritional blindness caused by Vitamin A deficiency, especially among children. Vitamin A is essential for maintaining healthy eyesight and a deficiency can lead to night blindness, dryness of the eyes (xerophthalmia), and in severe cases, complete blindness. The programme involves periodic administration of high doses of Vitamin A supplements to children under 5 years of age. Why other options are incorrect:

Quality Control Manager: Focuses on maintaining quality standards in food production and is more relevant to food technology, not clinical settings.
Specialist in HACCP: Ensures food safety and hygiene through hazard analysis, critical control points—important in food processing and hospitality but not directly in patient care.
Sensory Evaluator: Assesses food products based on taste, texture, aroma, etc., which is part of food product development, not clinical nutrition. Thus, the correct and most suitable option for a career in clinical nutrition is (C) Diet Consultant.

The demand for readymade foods in India has increased mainly due to:
Catering to the needs of working women (iii): With more women joining the workforce, the time available for cooking has reduced, increasing the preference for convenient, ready-to-eat foods.
Changes in lifestyle (iv): Urbanization, fast-paced lives, and greater exposure to global food habits have increased the demand for quick and easy food options like readymade foods. Why other options are incorrect:
Deficit in agriculture (i): While it affects food supply, it does not directly increase demand for readymade foods.
To decrease the nutritive value of diet (ii): This is not a reason; on the contrary, people prefer foods with good nutrition. Therefore, factors (iii) and (iv) are responsible for the growing demand for readymade foods in India.

Meal planning is an essential part of managing time, health, and nutrition. It involves selecting and organizing meals in advance to meet the dietary needs of individuals or families. Several factors influence meal planning, and three important ones are:
1. Nutritional Needs: The most important factor in meal planning is ensuring that the meals provide the necessary nutrients for good health. This includes balancing proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals according to the individual's age, activity level, and health conditions. For example, a growing child needs more calories and protein, while an elderly person may require a diet low in sodium. Proper meal planning helps meet these specific nutritional needs.
2. Budget: Meal planning is also influenced by the budget available for purchasing food. Consumers must consider how to buy healthy, nutritious foods without exceeding their financial limits. Budget-friendly meal planning often involves buying in bulk, choosing seasonal or local produce, and reducing food waste by utilizing leftovers. Meal planners must also evaluate the cost of ingredients and aim for balanced meals within their budget constraints.
3. Time and Convenience: The amount of time available for meal preparation is another factor that affects meal planning. Busy individuals or families may prefer meals that are quick to prepare or that can be cooked in advance and stored for later use. Additionally, convenience plays a role in selecting easy-to-cook ingredients or ready-made meals that still maintain nutritional quality. For those with limited time, meal planning might involve batch cooking or using time-saving kitchen appliances such as slow cookers or pressure cookers.
