Human Reproduction

Nervous system consists of highly specialized cells called the neurons. The neurons detect and receive information from different sensory organs and integrate them to determine the mode of response of the body. Nervous system is ectodermal in origin.

Fallopian tubes or oviducts are about long and carry eggs from ovaries to uterus. The ends of the tubes nearest the ovaries have fimbries. Cilia lining the fimbriae beat and cause a current, which moved in the ovum or egg after it is released from ovary. Fertilization takes place in oviduct in mammals.

The anterior portion of the sperm head which is covered by cap-like structure is called acrosome. It contain hydrolytic enzyme called sperm lysins, e.g., acrosin, hyaluronidase and neuraminidase (a trypsin like enzyme). Besides acrosomes, head also contain a lightly fitting nucleus, whose shape is species specific. Another regions of human sperm are neck, middle piece and tail (flagellum).

Each Fallopian tube is about long and extends from the periphery of each ovary to the uterus, the part closer to the ovary is the funnel-shaped infundibulum. The edges of the infundibulum possess finger-like projections called fimbriae, which help in collection of the ovum after ovulation. The infundibulum leads to a wider part of the oviduct called ampulla. The last part of the oviduct, isthmus has a narrow lumen and it joins the uterus.

Interstitial cells or Leydig cells are the cells interspersed between the seminiferous tubules of the testis. They secrete androgens in response to stimulation by luteinizing hormone from the anterior pituitary gland.

The sperm can stay viable for several days and not just for hours. Survival of sperm do depend on and that to alkaline; hence the of the semen is . Viability of sperm can be determined by motility. Sperms are suspended in seminal fluid or semen which is thick in nature.
