Cells of columner epithelium are tall and prismatic in shape. Their nuclei are basal and somewhat elongated. Gut epithelium from stomach to anus is simple columnar.

Epithelium made up of a series of layers is called stratified epithelium. The cells of each layer vary in size and shape. It is also called laminated epithelium. It is found in olfactory region of the nasal cavity and contains the receptors for the sense of smell.
