The Female Reproductive System

Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT) is a reproductive technique where a fertilized zygote is implanted into the fallopian tube rather than the uterus. It is particularly beneficial for couples dealing with infertility, notably when the woman has obstructed fallopian tubes.
Steps in ZIFT:
Ovarian Stimulation: Hormones are administered to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
Egg Retrieval: A minor surgical procedure is used to collect eggs from the ovaries.
Fertilization: Eggs are then fertilized with sperm in a lab environment.
Zygote Transfer: The fertilized egg, now a zygote, is surgically transferred into the fallopian tube via laparoscopy.
Implantation & Pregnancy: The zygote moves naturally toward the uterus where it implants and potentially results in pregnancy.

Hormones Produced by the Ovaries: The ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone, which are crucial for regulating various aspects of female reproductive health.
1. Estrogen:
(i) Facilitates the development of female secondary sexual characteristics.
(ii) Manages the menstrual cycle phases.
2. Progesterone:
(i) Supports the maintenance of the uterine lining for pregnancy.
(ii) Suppresses ovulation during pregnancy.

Types of Reproductive Isolation:
Reproductive isolation serves as a critical mechanism that restricts gene flow between distinct species, facilitating speciation.
1. Pre-mating Isolation (Prezygotic Barriers)
Temporal Isolation: Species breed during different periods.
Mechanical Isolation: Physical differences hinder successful mating.
2. Post-mating Isolation (Postzygotic Barriers)
Hybrid Inviability: Hybrids fail to develop correctly.
