In the binomial system of classification, every species is given in a two-part name. The first part represents a genus and the second part is a specific epithet. Together these two are called species. E.g., Oryza sativa where Oryza is genus and sativa is specific epithet and these two together represents species.

Ernst Mayr (1942) proposed the biological species concept, which defines species as groups of actually or potentially interbreeding natural populations, which are reproductively isolated from other such groups.
