If the process of replication of DNA is repeated many times, the segment of DNA can be amplified to approximately a billion times, i. e., billion copies are made. Such repeated amplification is achieved by the use of a the mostable DNA polymerase.

Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer isolated an antibiotic resistance gene by cutting out a piece of DNA from a plasmid which was responsible for conferring antibiotic resistance, in the year 1972.
