Karl Marx’s theory of the “Asiatic mode of production” described early forms of social and economic organization in Asian societies. In this model, rural communities were largely self-sufficient and organized around collective ownership of land. Marx suggested that these societies were egalitarian in nature, lacking class divisions typically seen in feudal or capitalist systems. The state played a central role in managing resources such as irrigation, but internally, villages exhibited egalitarian structures.
